Insider Maui Vacation Tips

Travel to Maui and you may feel like you are leaving the country. Fortunately, while you can enjoy the benefit of an exotic vacation destination in a tropical paradise, you are still in the U.S. That doesn't mean it'll be like visiting the state next-door to yours, however. Here are some little details about Maui that a lot of visitors don't know about.

1. Traveling with pets and produce. Most fruits and vegetables can't be brought from other states into Hawaii and will be confiscated at the airport. Some things can't be brought back from Maui to the mainland as well, like sugarcane and fresh flowers. Check the Dept of Agriculture for more information, so your airport experience is as smooth as possible. Bringing pets with you is a lot harder than when you travel between other states. Review Hawaii's strict quarantine laws to make sure your animal meets the requirements.

2. How to budget. Buying a lot of little things here and there adds up pretty quickly. There are a lot of places out there that don't seem very enjoyable unless you have money to spend, but on Maui, the best things are free, or at least very inexpensive. Go to the beach, drive to Hana on the jungle side of Haleakala, go up to the Crater (which only includes a very small entrance fee). There's a lot you can do with just a little gas money.

3. Being prepared. There are some remote places you might want to see because of their unique natural beauty, like the destinations we just mentioned. Check out a map and figure out how far you have to travel. Plan for gas accordingly. In the remote places, gas stops can be extremely sparse. In high elevation areas, plan to wear warm clothes. No matter where you go, bring your camera!

4. Cameras. Don't leave them lying around unattended. If you leave your camera in your car, leave it in your trunk. Never leave it out on the seat or floor of your car. Also, keep your car safely locked up whenever you are away. This is just common sense no matter where you are.
